Overview

Te Henga (Bethells Beach) is a place rarely discovered by travellers. It beholds the wildest most rugged coastline of the whole of Auckland. Adventuring in Te Henga is a magical experience that will reconnect you with nature and awaken your senses.

Visit the giant black sand dunes hidden inland from the beach by walking barefoot through the forest up the shallow stream. Follow your experienced and safety conscious guide as he navigates you through estuaries, caves, tunnels, cliff tops and native forest in the west coast wilderness. Some sections of the walk will be challenging.

Visit our highest altitude lookout on the way back. Yes, higher than the Sky tower!

Bare feet are suggested for the walk as we are crossing water and wet sand but please note: the black sand can be hot during summer! Bring beach shoes.

What To Expect

Te Henga (Bethells Beach)

Snacks and warm up stretches on arrival at the main beach before we adventure into the west coast wilderness. Follow your experienced and safety conscious guide as he navigates you through the estuary to find the cathedral sea caves that tunnel into the natural amphitheatre covered in native forest. Climb the track to stand on the cliff top rocks once part of the mainland for a rest break with a view. Walk the elevated forest track with views of the whole coast back to discover black quicksand in the estuary.

Approximately 3 hours return.

For the keen adventurers only. Our time on the wild coast is spent navigating estuaries, rainforest, cliffs, caves, tunnels and black quicksand. Some of which will require your bare feet.

WARNING: Bethells Beach, although beautiful and peaceful, can be an extremely dangerous place to explore and is not suggested without the company of an experienced guide.
